UNESCO has reiterated its commitment to support initiatives geared towards the sustainability of community radios (CRs) in Tanzania.
Mr. Tirso Dos Santos, UNESCO Head of Office and Representative made the commitment in Dar es Salaam on August 27, 2019 while officiating a training workshop on social sustainability to radio managers who double as change makers from the southern zone.
“UNESCO appreciates the great role played by CRs. We real need to think on how sustainability those initiatives are and if we do not support them, they will collapse. CRs are important given the importance of the communities where they are located,” said Mr. Tirso.
The overall objective of the social sustainability training is to enhance the capacities of community radios on organizational management and strategic planning, financial management, social inclusion including community participation, communication and visibility and marketing strategies to foster CR sustainability.
Apart from Dar es Salaam ,UNESCO has organized similar sessions in Iringa, Arusha and Sengerema involving 72 participants from 25 community radio stations.

UNESCO through funding from the Swiss Development Corporation (SDC) supports 25 community radios and the network of community media in Tanzania (TADIO).
The support is meant to ensure that people in Tanzania, especially the poor, women and girls, have the capacity to make informed decisions on issues that affect their daily lives based on access to relevant, culturally appropriate, gender responsive accurate information and knowledge.
