UNESCO supported community radios to share their success stories at AU Youth Forum

UNESCO, supported community radio will be sharing their success stories at the Africa Union’s Pan-African Youth Forum, in Addis Ababa slated for April 24 to 27, 2019.

Amina Mrisho from Pambazuko Community Radio and Mohamed Rajab from Pangani community Radio have been selected owing to using their professionals as community media practitioners to make positive changes among young people in their communities.  UNESCO has in several occasions trained the two.  Apart from the youth forum, the duos will also participate in the World Press Freedom Day Commemorations for the year 2019 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The forum brings together young people from all AU member states, major investors and partners on the continent. The objectives of the forum are to launch the AUC One million by 2021 initiative, inaugurate the AUC Chairperson Youth Envoy and Advisory Council and to mobilize young people to co-create innovative and transformative solutions towards the AUC One Million by 2021 Initiative.

Other objectives are to galvanize political commitment through the AU Summit and commitment of key partners to create an enabling environment for scaling up durable solutions for young people on the continent.

In Tanzania, UNESCO through funding from the Swiss Development Corporation (SDC) supports 25 community radios and the community media network – TADIO. The support is meant to ensure that people in Tanzania, especially the poor, women and girls, have the capacity to make informed decisions on issues that affect their daily lives based on access to relevant, culturally appropriate, gender responsive accurate information and knowledge.
