“As Ministers we recognize the importance of Information Technology and Communication, this technology has great benefits so the journalist they have to know Information Technology and commucation in detail will help deliver information more quickly and more accurately.” said the Deputy Minister of Information, Art, Culture and Sports – Juliana Shonza – during World Day celebration held on February 13, 2019
The event was coordinated by UNESCO in collaboration with the Network of Community Media in Tanzania ( TADIO).
Prosper Kwigize, Chairperson for the Network of Community Media in Tanzania (TADIO) made a powerful speech with a call for the government to provide tax relief on radio equipment. TADIO enjoys support from UNESCO under its SDC Project.
UNESCO Head of Office and Representative, Mr Tirso Dos Santos shares touching story of how Radio Tanzania broadcast messages of hope and freedom during the liberation movement as a young boy in Mozambique in 1973. Today Mozambique is free.
Radio reaches more people than any other media platform. It educates and raises awareness on important issues, providing an interactive platform where people can air their views, concerns and grievances. UNESCO will continue to support media development for the achievement of the #SDGs in Tanzania

Prof Elifas Bisanda, the Vice Chancellor of the Open University of Tanzania and the Chairperson of the UNESCO National Commission shares his story of his experience with the radio-in 1959, his father was the first in his village to own a radio. “There were many eyes on it. The radio was the first miracle in the village.” Radios continue to promote peace and unity in the country.
The Open University of Tanzania hosts the Secretariat and production studio for the community media network-TADIO.
The University offers an undergraduate degree course in Journalism, Mass Communication and Public Relations. All practicing and aspiring communication specialists are encouraged to apply.

World Radio Day celebrations in Tanga ended on a high note with renewed commitment from@TADIO @UNESCO, Government and stakeholders to further efforts to achieve the #SDGs in Tanzania through increased access to information, particularly for populations in rural and hard to reach areas. Informed citizens make better choices for development.
